Topological insulators (TIs) have lately been a hot area of condensed matter research. One of the newest TIs, samarium hexaboride (SmB6), is actually a very old and well-known material with a lingering mystery that has only lately been solved by recent TI theory and experiments. I will present some of this fascinating research history, my own involvement in unraveling the mystery, and efforts to understand the electronic structure of the material since.
