ABSTRACT
Mobile video is becoming a key driver of lifestyle in the networked age. Reconciling demanding video applications with scarce wireless spectrum, however, is no easy task for network researchers and operators, and traditional mobile resource management techniques often interact poorly with client-driven control of streaming applications. I propose solutions that rethink the interactions between the client's decisions and the network operator’s optimizations. As illustrated through three cases: LTE video multicast, MPEG-DASH video delivery, and data-quota-constrained video adaptation, I show how inter-disciplinary research across multimedia signal processing, wireless networking, and network economics can achieve the twin goals of fair provisioning of user experience and efficient utilization of wireless resources.
