Degrees conferred to 19 Ph.D. students at commencement

The 2018 Graduate Commencement Ceremony was held on June 4, conferring the Ph.D. to 19 students from electrical engineering. No masters degrees were conferred this year.
 
Graduate alumnus Yan Huo *93 delivered a prepared speech to the crowd of graduates, students and families. Huo is the co-founder of Capula Investment Management, a London-based hedge fund currently valued at $15 billion. 
 
Director of Graduate studies and Associate Professor Naveen Verma announced the recipients of this year's departmental awards. The Early Stage Career Award, given to a student who has completed the second year of the program with an outstanding general exam grade, went to Zihuai Zhang. Zhang is advised by Assistant Professor Nathalie de Leon. The Bede Liu Best Dissertation Award was shared between two students, Tiffany Moy and Jingbo Liu. Moy is advised by Verma, and Liu is advised by Sergio Verdú, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering.
