Toward hybrid quantum devices using rare earth ions in solids

Abstract: Superconducing qubits are now one of the most high profile candidates for realizing practical quantum logic devices. However there is no way to interface two remote superconducting qubit devices. One way to solve this problem is the reversible conversion of microwave photons, which naturally couple strongly to superconducting qubits, to optical photons. Such a frequency converter would also enable superconducting qubits to use optical quantum memories, which are much more advanced than their
microwave counterparts.

I will talk about our theoretical proposal for microwave and optical conversion using rare earth ions in solids as well as progress in our lab towards reaching this goal.
