Biography

Javier is working since March 1989 at the European Space Agency (ESA) involved in several space programmes, including, mobile and fix telecommunications, earth observation and satellite navigation programmes. He is currently working in Satellite Navigation as the Head of the EGNOS Mission and System Evolution Section at the ESA EGNOS (equivalent to WAAS in USA) Project and is much involved in the European Galileo Satellite Navigation System.

Together with Felix Toran he is the inventor of the SISNET technology (which received several International Awards) allowing the transmission through Internet of Satellite Navigation signals. He is also the originator of the ESA ALIVE concept, proposing the use of SBAS for disaster management prevention, and of multiple other Satellite Navigation applications and EGNOS related activities.

Dr. Ventura-Traveset holds 4 patents and has authored or co-authored over 200 technical papers and 2 books; he has chaired, organised and participated as Technical Executive of several space related and satellite navigation conferences; he recently edited (January 2007) the book " The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System, a cornestone of Galileo"; he is the recipient of several awards including the award for best PhD Thesis from the Spanish Electrical Engineers Association, in 1996, the European Space Agency medal of confirmed inventor in 2001, the European Space Agency award runner up prize in 2002 and the prestigious “Salva & Campillo” Engineering Award in 2004. Dr. Ventura-Traveset is a professional member of the US Institute of Navigation and a Senior-member of the IEEE.

Dr Ventura-Traveset graduated with Honours with a M.S. in Telecommunication Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain); holds a M.S.E (GPA 4.0) with majors in Signal Processing and communications by Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey, USA); a PhD in Electrical and communications Engineering by the Polytechnic of Turin (Italy) (awarded for best PhD Thesis); he has performed several Executive management courses at different European Business schools, including INSEAD Business School (France), the European Management Centre (Brussels, Belgium)and the Oxford Group (UK).
