Ozge Akmandor, a Ph.D. candidate in electrical engineering, has been selected into the 2019 cohort of Rising Stars, a highly competitive academic career workshop for women in electrical engineering and computer science.
Akmandor has developed new approaches to machine learning algorithms that increase predictive accuracy. Her work combines traditionally distinct methods from applications like image processing, which relies on geometric features, and natural language processing, which relies on semantic meaning, to improve machine-learning applications in biomedical technology.
Rising Stars was first created in 2012 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Five different institutions have hosted the workshop since. This year's event will be held at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in October.
Currently entering her fifth year as a graduate student, Akmandor is advised by Niraj Jha, professor of electrical engineering.
